Congressman Rivera meets with Colombian Ambassador; Pledges to Continue work on Free Trade Agreements

[2011-03-04 12:03:03]
Washington D.C. - Congressman David Rivera (FL-25) met today with Colombian Ambassador Gabriel Silva following a letter spearheaded by Rivera and other members of the Republican freshman class urging President Obama to lend his voice to the effort to pass free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea. Rivera, along with Senator Marco Rubio, Congressman Mario Diaz Balart, and Florida Governor Rick Scott participated in an event at the Port of Miami.

“Colombia is one of our best allies in Latin America .Passing the Colombia Free Trade Agreement would provide an immediate boost to our economy by eliminating trade barriers and boosting U.S. exports to Colombia. U.S. GDP would increase by roughly $2.5 billion and exports by over a billion, creating thousands of jobs in the United States,” Congressman Rivera said.

Congressman Rivera also participated in a meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk earlier this week in which he urged the administration to begin moving on the trade agreements.

“The United States must lead on ensuring economic stability in Latin America. Approving pending Free Trade Agreements with Colombia and Panama and the extension of the Andean Trade Preference Act, which will especially help Colombia maintain a stable and fully functioning economy, are steps in the right direction to keep trade avenues open between the United States and Latin America,” Rivera added.

"The letter from 67 freshmen Members shows their commitment to a pro-growth agenda,” commented Congressman Dave Camp (R-MI), Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, which oversees trade policy. “The letter underscores the importance of passing the three pending trade agreements with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea without delay, and the critical role that these agreements play in creating good-paying U.S. jobs. Republicans are ready to work with the President on a comprehensive trade agenda to create real and sustained private sector job creation. Passing the three pending trade agreements is the essential first step."
